Christmas Past

This was my Christmas photo last
year.
It has been my practise to
make little photos in December
little photos in largish editions
and at a lowish price.
This photo I keep coming
back to for some reason.
I’m glad about that.

Bluebells

Often over the last few years
I have made Christmas photos.
Here is this years example,

A couple of months ago I had
quite a bad dose of the flu
but managed to get up on a
Sunday morning and go the
local Farmer’s Market where I
bought these bluebells.

I was able to take this
photo without even getting
out of bed.

Meat Scene

This photograph was taken in the 80’s
when I was an artist in residence artist
in Rangitoto College in Auckland, now one of
the biggest secondary schools in New Zealand.

These are frozen hearts, probably from cattle
and being defrosted for a biology class.

They are immersed in hot water
in this stainless steel sink,
thawing out before a dissection class.

Carcass

Walking in Ponsonby a few evenings
ago, I took this photo of a sheep
carcass in the window of a small
boutique butcher. On this occasion
the photo was taken using
my smart phone.

I couldn’t help but be reminded
of a photo that I made a year or so ago,
see below, this time in a window
in Eltham in Taranaki.
The difference is that this carcass
is not real. It was part
of a movie set.

Pukeiti

Near New Plymouth there is a very
large garden, 360 hectares of it, on the side
of snowy Mount Taranaki. Called Pukeiti it was
established in 1951.

Planted in amongst the rain forest
is a very important plant collection,
notably rhododendrons. There is a
nip in the slightly alpine air at Pukeiti that they
particularly like.

The weekend before last I took this colour
photo of a rata that survived
the early milling that ravaged this area

I’m not sure whether I want to keep it,
but ten years ago I took the photo below, of another
Rata also at Pukeiti. I did print it
up into an edition.

Pen

Ran out of business cards recently
but decided to buy some ball point
pens with my name inscribed instead.

Congruence Again

I know I have written about congruence before,
I probably used words like template, and phrases
like templates that I carry, I might have even
said something like that on Kim Hill
while broadcasting to the nation.

I can’t help it, I keep taking photographs that
remind me of photographs that I have taken before,
although, always hopefully, the most recent will
in flavour and tone at least, add something
to it’s predecessor.
If it doesn’t then I am merely quoting myself,
raking the ashes and that is not healthy.
The top photo was taken about 4 years ago at
McCraes Flat gold mine in Otago.
These trucks are huge and I printed a few
of these images biggish in this case but not
just because the trucks were big of course.
I think I sold 3 or 4 prints.

The other photo was taken in Norsewood,
a Danish settlement in the
lower half of the North Island.
I noticed these stumps on a distant hill.
I don’t know what the trees were originally.
There will be many people in Norsewood who
could tell me and I’m ready to ask them.

These stumps were a long way away but luckily
I had just bought a new Nikon
for about $800  mainly because it
has a huge telephoto lens.

That lens enabled me to reach out
and suck this photo in. I particularly like the flattening
of the planes.

Sydney

When I travel,  I’m always looking
for a new photo. Having a few
days in Sydney last week gave me
a chance to do some exploring.
The structure in a children’s playground
caught my attention so I took a quick snap
with my phone.
Not as interesting to me but
not one I want to discard just yet
is this photo of the Sydney Harbour
bridge.

Eugene Atget

Last week I was in Sydney
and went to see an exhibition
Gallery of New South Wales.

There were over 200 works
on the walls
but what impressed me was the large number
of visitors to the show.
Every wall was crowded like this,
catalogue sold out.
It was a pleasure to behold.
