Sticking to the Ribs

I am nearly halfway through my 12 months here in Alexandra and am asking myself what photographs have I made in that time. Photographs that stick to the ribs I mean. Keepers.

Every day, all the time in fact, day or night, weekends too, I’m thinking about my work. I can’t seem to help it, the pressure seems irresistible. I do think that it can take its toll on those who are close though, I’ve always been sorry about that.

When I keep returning to an image that I have, that is a good sign. The snapper fillet that I photographed was taken a few months ago in my New Plymouth house and studio, when I had to make a visit there and it is one of those. The print is a large one, human sized and is pinned up there. This photo resonates within me in a deeply sad way, I find.

Cover Story

I have a book being published on September 10th. Here is the photo chosen for the cover.
It was a toy that I bought at a $2 shop.

Alexandra this Evening.

The light is changing, there is a warmth to it.
I notice that there is colour in the trees.
Notice the famous Alexandra clock on the side of the hill.

One of my favourite sites, the confluence of the Clutha and the Manuherikia. There is a shingle beach at this point.

Grape Pruning

Here are some grapes, quite old I would think, growing here at Henderson House.
They are in a slightly dilapidated glasshouse. They’ve just had their first pruning in many years hence the nakedness.

Two Goats

Here are some new photos that are being organised here on my studio floor. I took this image last year but have only just printed it up.

Saturday Night in Invercargill.

I went to a party in Invercargill on Sat night. It was a privilege to be there.

Two Views

Here are two views taken today. The top one, is of me signing the back of prints. Thank you H, I like it, especially the telescope in the background.

If I was to raise my eyes from the table at which I am working the bottom photo is the view that I would see.

Combine Harvester

I always liked the sound of that phrase even though I was never that sure what a combine
harvester really did. Here is one, made in Germany, that has gone into retirement on the side of the road near Roxburgh.

Happy Birthday

Last Saturday I went to a 50th birthday party in Invercargill. I have often visited the host’s house where the the party was held and often taken snaps of the decor. Here is last Saturday’s version.

Stump Study
Yesterday I was a few kilometres south of Alexandra. This cluster of stumps is quite a long way from the road and I had to a very telescopic setting on my camera. Also my car was parked on a rather precarious shoulder of the road.
Nevertheless, there is something going on out there. There is a hint of Stonehenge.
